New year dreams and goals … are you a fan?

I have been struck recently by the reality that for many the beginning of a new year is a dread. I’ve found myself in several conversations where the feelings aren’t of optimism, hope, expectancy but of anxiety, fear and discomfort. As Michelle Obama so aptly points out in her new book, ‘The Light We Carry’, we have been living through an extended period of pain, loss, and uncertainty that has touched every corner of our world. These times have left us wobbly and unsettled. Wherever you find yourself on this spectrum, or if you find yourself, like me, swinging between like a metronome, that’s ok. We’re allowed to lean into both.

Michelle concludes her first chapter with these words: "I wonder whether it’s time to stop asking 'When will this end?' and instead to start considering a different, more practical set of questions about staying upright inside of challenge and change. How do we adapt? How do we get more comfortable, less paralyzed inside of uncertainty? What tools do we have to sustain ourselves? Where do we find extra pillars of support? How can we create safety and stability for others? And if we work as one, what might we manage to overcome together?

These words resonated profoundly with me. I personally love the start of the year, for me, it’s a reset moment, a chance to take a breath and go again. I have always written dreams and goals though this year I find myself holding them more lightly. More than ever aware of the changing uncertain nature of our world and determined to not be defined or constrained by my aspirations but inspired and motivated to keep pushing forwards. If we’ve learnt anything running Recognised the last few years, contending with sickness and navigating a global pandemic is this - nothing is certain, everything can change. All that matters is our purpose; to see a world where people feel seen, valued and recognised.

With that in mind I’d love to share our dreams and goals for Recognised in 2023 with you, written on the foundation of our purpose and importantly held accountable to it too. As always, I wholeheartedly believe, start with the purpose in mind and the rest will follow.

1. LAUNCH CONCEPT STORE

A place of belonging and space to convene people and their shared experiences.

2. CREATE A NEW POPON

Do you know, it’s been over two years since we launched a Popon? There have been good reasons for that which I won’t share now, however it feels like the right time again. There are so many experiences and causes to choose from though a few on the top of our list (and hearts) are, female empowerment, grief, refugees. What would you like to see?

3. GROW OUR COMMUNITY

To increase connection between people and our shared experiences. We’ve had the privilege of understanding and witnessing the power of this first hand through our pop-ups, customer testimonials and events. Often the greatest moments of recognition are derived from those who’ve shared similar experiences and can recognise it in another. The World of Recognised is a key part of this and we’d love to hear from you if you’d like to share your story as part of our Community section.

4. NEW GIFTING PRODUCTS

100% driven by our purpose. We are creating beautiful and meaningful gifting products to motivate people and help people show expressions of love. This has been almost 3 years in the making and we can’t wait to share more with you.

5. Launch the Recognised foundation

Formally launch The Recognised Foundation and establish new recognition projects, funded by your purchases, helping people to feel seen, valued and recognised at times in their lives they need it most. My heart could actually burst - this evolution of impact is the single most important thing we are doing this year and we can’t wait to see many lives touched by small acts of recognition which make a big difference.

6. take the long view

Continue to take the long view, building a business that will last for generations to come which impacts our decisions today. Measuring success to the extent to which we’re authentic to our purpose and nothing else.

So there you have it, 6 things we’re pursuing and inspired by. Six things that may not happen how and when we plan but with hopeful expectation we show up each day and try our best to bring about, knowing if we do, we’ll be one step closer to achieving our vision and daily delighting in a purpose fulfilled.
