ABBIE RICHARDS

As Recognised turns 5 years old and on Giving Tuesday 2023, we are excited to announce the launch of The Recognised Foundation - helping people to feel, seen, valued and recognised when they need it most.

The Recognised Foundation was created to help grow the important work of recognising people when they need it most and enable us to create new projects where we’ve long seen a gap for them as well as continuing to collaborate with existing and new charity partners. We believe that recognition, no matter how small or simple, has the power to change someone's situation for the better.

Introducing Recognition Projects - a collection of beautifully and thoughtfully curated services to help people feel seen, valued and recognised when they need it most.

What does the Recognised Foundation do?

Introducing Recognition Projects - a collection of beautifully and thoughtfully curated services to help people feel seen, valued and recognised when they need it most. From dinners connecting people experiencing loneliness to monthly letters of encouragement to teenage girls- every project is focused around one of our 6 causes (Mental Health, Cancer Support, Motherhood, Solidarity, Modern Slavery, Female Empowerment) and has been created with this thought in mind: How can we recognise people when they need it most?

This Christmas, for the first time at Recognised, our customers will be able to pick the Recognition Project they’d like to support with every purchase. Each order now comes with a special Recognition Card for you to choose a project or pass on the choice if it's a gift.

Read on to find out about each Recognition Project in a bit more detail. This article explores each one and tells you all you need to know for each project.

We’re so excited for this evolution of social impact at Recognised and want to thank our community for the change you’ve helped create so far, raising nearly £100,000 for charity projects, representing thousands of lives made brighter when they needed it most. Recognition is powerful and the smallest bit can go a long way in bringing hope and compassion to people’s day.

Recognised Dinners: Dinners of connection for people experiencing loneliness

The main aim of these dinners is connection. We thoughtfully curate a space where people can connect with one another in a safe, judgment free environment and feel able to vulnerably and appropriately share some of what they’re walking through. Courage and vulnerability only lead to greater connection and we know there is such empowerment in shared experiences. Someone once said to us “one of the best cures for loneliness isn’t necessarily more frequent interaction, it is more meaningful interaction.”

The evening is centered around a home-cooked 3 course meal and follows a carefully thought out design of moments which foster connection. From conversation starters and connection cards to getting the guests involved in serving and clearing up, the evening culminates in ‘stories of bravery’. Going around the table, each person takes it in turns to encourage someone else at the table, and then share a story of a time they were proud of themselves. In sharing this story of courage, it allows the person to be brave in that moment, but also encourages recognising in yourself the things there are to be proud of.

2. MODERN SLAVERY

Wardrobe Renewal

This 'Recognised Moment' was created to recognise women who have been rescued from trafficking and extreme exploitation as they re-enter the world and rebuild their lives. It is an experience especially designed to help show women their worth and beauty, to empower them and enable them to make their own clothing choices, and to equip them with a capsule wardrobe that will make them feel confident from head to toe.

We are continuing to partner with the amazing Ella’s charity, and giving the women coming out of their safe house accommodation access to this bespoke service.

Each woman who has access to this afternoon of love and care will have the chance to take home items of clothing that will help her to feel truly herself and to walk with confidence. We know that clothes themselves don’t solve the issue of modern slavery or the trauma ensued by victims, but we do know that women who have experienced such trauma deserve a beautiful experience curated just for them to feel truly special and seen. This service is just one of many important support lines for women rebuilding their lives. We know that this will be a stunning confidence boost as they exit the safe houses and help to instil their immense worth.

4. motherhood

Meals for Mum’s

This service is designed for parents who are feeling the weight of parenthood that little bit more. Whether it be parents who are fresh from the hospital room, new adoptive/foster parents or parents with a child in hospital, we want to recognise parents with an essential meal service right when they need it most.

We will provide COOK vouchers for two weeks worth of nutritious meals that are quick, easy and simple to prepare. Sometimes it’s the practical things being taken care of that can make the biggest difference.

5. SOLIDARITY

Community Concerts

We know that hundreds of people in our communities suffer from feeling isolated, lonely, or disconnected from others. We also know that music has the power to bring people together no matter their age, background, or circumstance. This is the vision behind Community Concerts; offering a regular opportunity for anyone to enjoy some coffee and cake, conversation, and beautiful music in the local community.

Held monthly on Wednesday mornings in Hammersmith, the concerts are informal, fun, and intended to be a community and connection space that can be enjoyed by the oldest to the youngest in attendance. You can find out more information here.

6. SOLIDARITY

Movie Night Magic

We want to recognise doctors, nurses and NHS workers who work to serve our country so diligently and selflessly. The aim of this Recognition Project is to make these people feel truly seen, valued and recognised and to give them the special treatment they deserve after working so hard to serve our nation.

Our hope is that people will leave these events feeling honoured and valued for the work they do and the hours they dedicate to keep our nation safe and cared for. We also know these movie events will provide a light relief that people won’t get in their day-to-day jobs, and are excited for the transformative power of the art of cinema in these spaces we create.

7. female empowerment

Women’s Employment Programme

Luminary Bakery is a social enterprise providing training, employment, recognition and community to some of the most disadvantaged women in London. The women they work with have been classified as experiencing "multiple disadvantages", including gender based violence (domestic abuse, prostitution, sexual exploitation, trafficking and honour based violence).

Where these traumatic experiences would so often push people to the sidelines, Luminary recognises the need for these women to be seen and heard, and to show them that their voices matter. Luminary works holistically with women, offering a safe space to train, trauma-informed support as they overcome barriers from lack of opportunity, preparation for employment, and guidance in building towards a positive future.

8. FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

Pink Letters

We support Pink Letters, a monthly letter writing service, sending letters of encouragement to teenage girls across the globe. In a world where being a woman comes with so many unique challenges, pink letters seek to recognise the struggle, bumps and challenges that so many young girls face as they journey through their time at school.

By recognising and encouraging young girls at this pivotal point in their lives, Pink letters seeks to bring connection, hope and empathy through shared experiences and recognition. The sheer power of knowing that you’re not alone when going through something can never be underestimated.
