THE RECOGNISED BRAND STORY

Our journey to sustainability - Earth Day 22nd April 2023

Sometimes it’s hard to see how your small contributions make a difference to the bigger picture - but like all things in life, every act, however big or small, always makes a difference.

THE RECOGNISED STORY

Our journey to sustainability - Earth Day 22nd April 2023

Sometimes it’s hard to see how your small contributions make a difference to the bigger picture - but like all things in life, every act, however big or small, always makes a difference.

The words sustainability and journey go hand in hand - whether it's in your own life or for a business, change doesn't happen overnight and requires a continued effort to see growth. Since we started in 2018, like all of us, we’ve been learning more about how to look after the beautiful world we live in and making changes to the way we do things to achieve this.

At times being a small business has made this easier (we've always worked to embed sustainably from the get go rather than undo less sustainable choices later). At other times, it has felt costly and a burden without the right team and resources in place to help navigate change. Sometimes it’s also hard to see how your small contributions make a difference to the bigger picture - but like all things in life, every act, however big or small, always makes a difference.

So here’s a snapshot of our journey so far, looking at where we started, where we are today and where we want to be tomorrow.

‘We have such a long way to go’, sighed the boy.

‘Yes, but look how far we've come’, said the horse.

WHERE WE STARTED:

  • We chose virgin metal for our jewellery, sourced from Korea, mined with 1% impact on the environment compared to other methods. We prioritised traceability to minimise the risk of slavery and poor working conditions in our supply chain.
  • We designed the Recognised jewellery box - the materials available weren’t fully recyclables but we designed with the long-term in mind, creating a product which would be loved, enjoyed and last for years to come.

WHERE WE ARE TODAY:

  • We now use recycled metal wherever possible in the creation of our jewellery and 50% off our jewellery is made with recycled materials.
  • We are carbon neutral and offset all our Carbon through our partnership with Ecologi. We have planted a forest of 1000 trees. Find out more here.
  • Keeping jewellery scratch free requires plastic protective packaging. We reuse all plastic in our organisation.

WHERE WE WANT TO BE TOMORROW:

  • 100% recycled metal used for jewellery - we’re working with our workshop to make this possible as well as sourcing new artisans who work with recycled materials.
  • Upgrade all our packaging to be made from recycled materials whilst still designing with the view of our products being enjoyed and to stand the test of time.
  • The World’s most meaningful gifting brand - creating meaningful and beautiful gifting products that help you express love to one another when you need it most. UK adults purchase an average of 31 gifts a year and every year 5 billion pounds is wasted on unwanted gifts. Through the creation of better gifts which are deeply meaningful, high quality and beautiful design, we aim to tackle the 5.2 billion pounds worth of unwanted goods which are wasted every year, one gift at a time. Subscribing to the principle of buying less and buying better.

So there you have it, our sustainable journey to date. By no means perfect but valuable contributions and decisions made to the collective effort in the fight against climate change.
