Why I wear it - Sumbo

Posted by on

I’m wearing the Dove Popon for everyone who's ever felt unrecognised. For everyone who shows up daily, who’s putting in the work, grinding and toiling but yet to get the recognition for their craft, hard work and talent like they truly deserve. For everyone who feels buried and hidden. Your time is coming. And the dove, for me is a reminder to be still. To be still in the midst of the turmoil and the wait. Stillness brings peace and tranquility. And sometimes, that’s all we need to keep going. To me, feeling recognised means to be acknowledged for something positive. This makes me feel respected, admired and also encouraged. Perhaps, it’s also an indication of doing something right- when the world accepts and approves of what I am doing. But in the meantime, I approve of what I’m doing. Because it may take the world time to see the value I bring to it, but it doesn’t change the fact that I am who I am, talented, valuable, creative, courageous and unique.

THE DOVE FOR ME IS A REMINDER TO BE STILL. TO BE STILL IN THE MIDST OF THE TURMOIL AND THE WAIT. STILLNESS BRINGS PEACE AND TRANQUILITY.

Someone close to me went through a bout of depression a few years ago. They were eventually diagnosed with a mental health challenge but they haven’t let that stop them from pursuing their dreams and ambitions. I have since had several people close to me go through a series of mental health issues which has brought mental health and how to be aware of the triggers to my awareness more than ever. Seeing the strength of these individuals has helped me in channeling my own energy in the right way to maintain a healthy mental shape.

Wearing the Popon is a reminder that we are not our circumstances. And these circumstances don’t have to define us. And also that there is a community of people out there going through similar challenges who continue to trudge on in faith and not be limited by the curveballs life throws at them.
